I still enjoy the fun stuff, from time to time, but can't get through the bleaker stories. Had to stop watching The Handmaid's Tale the first time the orange one was in office and never got back to it. (A book is one thing, but multiple seasons of a show was just too much.)
I absolutely love the Fallout show and it does have a great message about continuing to fight for a better world - a better humanity, but I totally understand where you're coming from.
It becomes horror movies. I love them even more right now. Keep in mind, from a certain point of view, Star Trek is this style of post-apocalyptic fiction.
As a person who lives in the US Southwest, I can confirm that radioactive desert people are already a thing, no apocalypse needed.
I totally understand, I feel like we are starting to live it now and I don't need to read or watch it too! It is too horrifying for me. Especially when I think about our children's future.
This is why I stopped reading Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. It just felt too bleak to continue. I had much better luck with her strange aliens in the Xenogenesis series
I've never ever liked post apocalyptic fiction because I don't understand why anybody would want to live it or survive it. I don't want to "survive" I want to thrive. That's just not entertainment to me. I thought that even before the hellscape, that is 2025.
Agreed, I can't read or watch any of it anymore. Especially since having kids, it feels like I'm reading about their future.
I feel you, and feel this is partly true for myself, but Fallout is such an incredibly fun show. I saw it when it came out and I've been wanting to re-watch it so bad lately. The overall message of the show it uplifting as well, and doesn't make you feel depressed like you think it might. I would recommend giving it a try. I also really fell in love with the Twisted Metal series. I can't quite explain why, but for some reason I don't get sick of stuff like these shows. I guess it has to have a comedic element to it, or it does just feel too real.
I love Geiger!! But I agree. For some reason, I've decided to re-watch the Walking Dead, and I'm seriously regretting it. All I can think about is the apocalypse.
Re 'Fallout', I was reluctant to start it but finally did after hearing for a while how good it was. It is excellent. I highly recommend. Totally get your point - I too am guarding my mental health these days! ( AHA! You're a cat person. AHA! )
Cat cameo!
I'm mostly done with dystopian fiction too, because our real world feels so dystopian. Might I suggest genres like Hopepunk and Solarpunk? Both are a bit more utopian and try to depict a more hopeful future.
We get Mad Max if we’re lucky. At this rate we’ll be in Fist of the North Star, or even worse, Violence Jack. The anime OVA so disturbing the country that Mad Max came from banned it.
If you think watching it is bad, imagine how it feels to be writing it and no sooner have you got the first draft than it's already happened. I don't know. I feel this. But at the same time, I find it very relaxing to play Cyberpunk 2077 as a form of escapism. And although I thought the Fallout games would be depressing, they were very cathartic. Cyberpunk 2077 is the same for me. I guess it's a Dr. Strangelove thing about 'How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.' Don't get me wrong -- I am very depressed currently about the state of the world.
Think of it as preparation😂
That's exactly why I stopped reading and not interested in post apocalyptic fiction, it feels a bit too real 😅
The best book I’ve read about post Apocalypse was the road
This is all so horribly true!
