I believe you are correct. I also believe that US interests had plenty of rare earth mineral interests, but sold them to China (Africa based) multiple years ago (during past Trump Administration), which elevated the need for these minerals to be found elsewhere. It is also important to Musk, Trump probably only understands this in terms of real estate that he "must have." When the rare earth assets in Africa were sold off, it was a big deal. And at that time, it was clear that the rare earth minerals needed for technology would require more global cooperation. This is not what this Administration is good at. They don't understand diplomacy, as you say.
