Originally in Greece, Medusa was simply one of three gorgon sisters born from primordial sea gods. Very uncomplicated, just a natural creature in the world who happened to be monstrous. It was also not actually stated [by Ovid in the later, Roman version] that she was a priestess of Athena, just that she was violated in Athena's temple. I'm not sure it's entirely clear whether Ovid was attempting to make his audience sympathize with innocent Medusa being unfairly punished by divine wrath [as he was wont to do from time to time], or if he was just doing a douchey Roman patriarchy thing when he made this change to the story. Some modern interpretations even suggest Athena was protecting Medusa by making her into a monster. Which answer you get will depend on who you ask.

Athena is embodiment of Daddy's Princess. Atleast Ares is a bit more honourable. But Zues favoured her while neglected Ares. This was likely due to the fact he liked to favour those towards whom his thing pointed at.

You failed to mention how Arachne was extremely boastful about her skill, to a point of arrogance. Arachne claimed herself to ne better than any God, and Athena told her to put her humanity where her mouth is. Athena didn't just change her to a spider, it was the result of their competition
