Write about your Bilingual Journey

Fostering a bilingual identity can be motivating and empowering for students. (Here is a video that discusses that:    • Building a Bilingual Identity in Stud...  )

This assignment is designed to help emergent bilinguals find their "why" as they study English.

Here is the software I use to make my videos: https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinm...

Transcript:

Learning a new language is not just tough, but emotional. It is a journey that is frustrating, exciting--and seemingly never ending. In many cultures--learning a language is compared to becoming a new person. And studies show that we view the emergence of this new person through the prism of a story.

Your mission is to write the story of your linguistic journey. What challenges have you had? What have you learned about yourself, other people, and the world. What triumphs have strengthened you? When and where this story begins is up to you. It is your story. However, as you write and reflect, dig up a theme. Every story has an underlying message--an inner voice, a belief that directs it. And you need to be aware of the theme guiding your story. Your theme could be “courage and heroism.” Perhaps you see yourself as courageous for learning a new language. Or your theme could be resentment. Maybe you are angry about your situation--and unsure about what you think about learning English. Whatever your theme is, be honest. The best narratives are direct, truthful, and revealing.

So think, reflect, and write your story--and be ready to share the theme that emerges as you write.
