New identity rules spark long waits and worries for Social Security recipients

The Social Security Administration is cracking down on identity theft.

And that means more people will now be required to vest an office to prove their identity. The response has resulted in some confusion, concern, and long wait times at agency field offices today. At the Social Security Administration Office in north Seattle, Kit Freeman was hoping to prove to the administration that he was "alive."

The identity theft security change affects new social security applicants and current recipients who want to change their direct deposit information. Those changes can be made online or in person, but not by phone.

The new rules take effect on March 31, but some recipients showed up concerned about waiting to be sure to avoid any delay in their benefits. It's a concern that the AARP State Director Marguerite Ro has heard as well.
