Daniel 1:1-21, Key Verse 8
“But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine,
and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.”
Daily Bread
1) Daniel’s pure faith.
Daniel was taken into exile and placed in a foreign land. In that situation, he could have taken advantage of whatever small pleasures he was given, like eating the royal food and wine. However, Daniel refused, knowing that food was likely offered to idols or not prepared according to Jewish laws. He stayed committed to God and kept his spiritual identity as God’s servant. As believers and citizens of God’s kingdom, we are called to live with that same dedication and purity. The Bible says, “Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11). We live in a world that offers temptation and fleeting pleasures at every turn, but we must remain devoted to our God. Remember, this world is not our home. We are foreigners, waiting to go to our true home in God’s kingdom.
2) God’s faithfulness to the faithful.
This passage isn’t only about Daniel’s faithfulness; it’s about God’s faithfulness! When Daniel requested a simple diet, it could have led to severe consequences, but God protected and blessed Daniel and his friends. He made them healthier and wiser than all their peers. When you make decisions that honor God, He will protect and provide for you. Do you trust in God’s faithfulness? When we look at ourselves or our situation, we may feel tempted to give up or despair, but when we learn to look up at God, we gain confidence because we know He stands with us. Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful." How will you remind yourself of God’s faithfulness today?
Prayer: Lord, help me to have faith like Daniel, staying committed to You and resisting the temptations of this world. I trust in Your faithfulness, knowing that You always provide, protect, and strengthen those who honor You. Remind me daily that my true home is in Your kingdom and give me the courage to stand firm in my faith. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
One Word: Stand firm on God’s faithfulness!
