Hikone Castle, a Japanese national treasure castle on the lakeside

Hikone Castle (彦根城) is located in the city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It takes about 1 hour by train from Kyoto. The castle sits on top of a hill, right next to Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. The castle was completed in 1622 after a construction period of twenty years. It was the castle of the Ii clan, a powerful lord, until the end of the feudal age in 1868. This is one of only twelve castles with its original castle keep, and one of only five castles listed as a National Treasure.
