#TeamRewild - Virunga's guardians need your support. On May 22 Mt. Nyiragongo, an active volcano, erupted in @virunganationalpark, Africa’s oldest and most biologically diverse protected area.
The volcano destroyed 3,000 homes and businesses, killed at least 32 people, and plunged the nearby city of Goma, with a population of 2 million, into almost total darkness.
Power lines were destroyed, cutting off access to the hydropower plant in Virunga that supplies 70% of Goma’s electricity.
Virunga’s hydropower plant provides sustainable power to homes, businesses and hospitals, as well as pumping stations that supply clean water to over one million people.
With power lines down and the threat of disease outbreak rising without access to clean water, many lives are now at risk.
Through the Rapid RESCUE program established by the @eu_partnerships and Re:wild, every donation will be matched 2 to 1.
