COP16 Colombia: Indigenous peoples' leadership is key in the global fight to protect #biodiversity

“Attending the #COP16 has been a great experience, a learning opportunity, but also a sadness for us as #IndigenousPeoples,” says @alexandra.narvaez.oficial, Indigenous guard & A’i Cofán leader of Sinangoe. “People come here and say beautiful things about caring for and protecting #biodiversity, but in reality, they don’t do it.”

Indigenous peoples' leadership is key in the global fight to protect biodiversity. Indigenous peoples have protected earth’s most biodiverse places for centuries, and now they are demanding that their role as the best stewards of biodiversity be recognized and protected.

Alexandra is part of our 23-person delegation currently on the ground at the United Nations’ Biodiversity Conference COP16. Together with Indigenous leaders and members of Amazon Frontlines & Alianza Ceibo , we are sending a clear message: Without Indigenous communities, we can’t solve the biodiversity crisis, and it is time for the world to listen to and learn from them!
