Devastating Fire Downtown - Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada

One person is missing, after a blaze in Bowmanville that’s forced a number of people from their apartments.

Clarington Fire Chief Dave Speed says they don’t have an estimate on damage yet but describes it as a “large loss.”

It broke out overnight, between Wednesday and Thursday, at 71 King Street West, between Scugog Street and Silver Street.

Speed says crews arrived “just before midnight,” adding that all residents of 71 King Street have been displaced.

No injuries have been reported, but one person is unaccounted for.

Emergency crews can’t say whether that person was in the building, at the time of the fire.

The fire has affected the businesses and residential units from 69 King Street West to 95 King Street West, on the south side of Bowmanville’s historic downtown.

The buildings include a number of businesses on the first floor.

Speed says crews found the fire on the third floor.

You’re asked to avoid the following areas, until further notice:

King Street West, between Scugog Street and Temperance Street
Access to Church Street from Scugog Street
Silver Street, between King Street West and Church Street.
Durham’s Emergency Social Services team has relocated residents to a hotel and is working to move families to new temporary accommodations.
