🇳🇿 New Zealand is rewilding 3 subantarctic islands so they become safe havens for native wildlife like Tokoeka Brown Kiwi and Chatham Islands Albatross, species found nowhere else in the world.
Today the Department of Conservation in New Zealand and Chatham Restoration Trust have joined the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge (IOCC) to boost conservation efforts on subantarctic Maukahuka/Auckland Island, Rakiura/Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands. The New Zealand government, Ngāi Tahu, Moriori, Ngāti Mutanga o Wharekauri and community partners have joined forces to implement this ambitious plan, which will protect threatened wildlife and restore the island ecosystems, enhancing their resiliency to the effects of climate change.
