Hummingbirds are very Territorial of my feeders even with multiple feeders spread out over the property. Listen close as another hummingbird is chirping and clicking finally resulting in it being chased away. Distinguish from all the other birds 🐦 chatting.
There's lots of Junco, Song Sparrow, Siskin, Finches, and Towhee nearby along with some Steller's Jay.
The snow cover worked, no snow on the feeder. The snow has stopped and birds are out feeding.
I keep seeing some hummingbirds prefer this feeder out in the open which during rain and snow they get wet. So I am trying this small umbrella to see if it helps and still gets used. I saw 2 birds so far within minutes. I will try getting some on video while it's snowing or raining. Stay dry and warm little birds.
I don't have very much freezing issues here in Western Washington State, however when it does get really cold I try to make sure the feeder is still usable for the hummingbird. I noticed the design makes a difference in how fast the container allows freezing and also what location. It does make a difference. I learned the nozzles freezing immediately.
Hummingbirds are simply amazing little birds. Today I had just walked up to setup the camera and this little bird buzzed up and I got the camera on just in time to get a one second clip of it. I slowed the one second down to 1/8 speed and still deleted some segments after slowing for what you see. It happened so fast. Sometimes they will hover by me for a while, but not this time.
During the last time I got a video recorded, I just finished cleaning and filling the regular bird feeders and then the hummingbird feeders. I pulled my phone out to record a Grosbeak when I heard a buzzing next to me. I slowly turned and a hummingbird was at the feeder to my left about 2 feet away. I swear they are waiting and watching me. Every time I bring a fresh batch out, they know.
Watching BIRDS gives me joy. They do some funny things interacting with each other. I also enjoy taking care of their needs if I can help in anyway. Every time I am outside near the bird feeder, I have noticed that some birds still come by to feed. They have started to get used to me and they come especially when I am refilling the feeders. I started to attempt if they would eat from my hand and on my fourth attempt, it happened. I got my first bird and it was a chickadee that ate from the hand. In the next 20 minutes or so, I had multiple birds come close and at least 6 or 7 more actually landed or ate from the hand. I felt such joy. I am hoping that as I do this on a regular basis, the other birds besides chickadees will also eat from the hand. I had many close success while I didn't have the camera with me recently. I hope as the spring comes and even more birds return, I can train more to trust me.
Having lots of fun and learning about birds late in my life is still a joy. Everyday it seems I encounter a new bird. This is just awesome. Thanks for watching, commenting, and sharing knowledge. I appreciate it.
Thanks for watching ☺🤩
