Cocoa plantations in Ghana and the Ivory Coast produce approximately 80% of the global cocoa supply, according to CorpWatch. These regions have become the epicenter of a labor crisis, with international pressure mounting on chocolate producers to ensure their products are not derived from child labor or slavery.

In 2000, the issue gained international attention with the BBC's Slavery: A Global Investigation, exposing child labor in the cocoa supply chain. A year later, in 2001, the Chocolate Manufacturers Association and its members signed an agreement pledging to eliminate child trafficking and forced labor in the cocoa industry by 2008. However, this ambitious goal fell short.

Efforts continued, with Mars and Cadbury partnering with the Rainforest Alliance in 2009, aiming to completely eradicate child labor by 2020. Despite these initiatives, reports from 2019 highlight that 1.56 million children were still working under exploitative conditions in Ghana and the Ivory Coast.

The documentary underscores the industry's failure to uphold its promises and brings attention to the human cost behind a seemingly harmless treat. With testimonies, investigations, and a focus on accountability, The Dark Side of Chocolate serves as a stark reminder that meaningful change in the cocoa industry remains an unfulfilled promise.
