1. IAF not in favour of acquiring Russian 5th Gen Jets, keen on DRDO's AMCA project instead.
It seems that the Indian Air Force is not in favour of acquiring the 127 fifth-generation fighter aircraft from Russia due to the "very high cost" involved in the project.
It in turn wants to back a DRDO Make in India project which it is planning to develop a similar plane called Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The cost of the FGFA programme is coming to be huge. While we have already spent close to $300 million, on the preliminary design phase.
The Russians are demanding $6.7 billion (Rs 44,800 crore) as the development cost of the planes which is coming to be much higher than what we had perceived," the sources revealed.
2. US planning more regular South China Sea patrols.
The Pentagon is planning to conduct more regular patrols in the South China Sea, as many as two to three a month, to assert freedom of navigation.
US officials declined to say where or when the new patrols would be made, but said the plan developed by the US Pacific Command calls for two or three so-called "freedom of navigation" operations a month over the next few months.
Future patrols also could include US military aircraft as well as US Navy ships.
3. Nepal-India joint military exercise begins
India and Nepal today began their joint military exercise in the western part of the Himalayan country.
The exercise Surya Kiran is being participated by around 300 troops each side.
The 12th edition of Nepal-India joint military exercise will conclude on September 16.
According to the Indian Army officials, the Surya Kiran is the largest joint exercise in terms of troop participation.
The Nepal Army said the joint exercise will provide the two armies a platform to exchange experiences, ideas and skills.
