Devon - English Desserts with Apples | At our Neighbour's Table

For the vegan Thomson family, there's a time of year when everything revolves around apples. Five years ago, parents Tom and Jess moved from the London suburbs to start a new life in Devon in the south-west of England. Their village of Cornwood is home to a communal apple orchard that is tended by the Thomsons and the other villagers.

The beginning of autumn marks the harvest of the orchard. Its many old and unusual varieties of apple are particularly well suited for sweet desserts including apple charlotte and apple blondies, as well as British classics such as apple crumble and apple pie baked with cider. The Thomsons bake their own vegan versions.

Mum and Dad were followed to Devon by their adult children. Daughters Connie and Lily and her boyfriend Jonah all live in the coastal town of Plymouth. There, Jonah is experimenting with an apple sourdough bread. His special trick is a yeast starter made from apple peels.

Cornwood village is on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. There are few trees on these beloved moorlands, but in a secluded woodland the Thomsons find numerous types of wild mushroom. The ‘hen of the woods’ has a spicy, earthy flavour and adds variety and character to their vegan menu, and hobby baker Jonah uses it to garnish a pizza that’s baked in the stone oven of his food truck.
