Waltz with a haunting story...

Khachaturian was attempting to mimic an earlier world - that of the Romantic poet Lermontov - so created this vividly colourful waltz. Meanwhile his own world was collapsing. The theatre in which this world was premiered was obliterated a month later but thankfully the music survived.
