The Charity BUSINESS | The Profitable Trade of Donations | Cheap Clothes High Prices

In Britain, thousands of tons of unwanted clothes are donated to charity shops each year. Yet, most of these clothes never make it to local shop shelves; instead, they are exported to Africa. Although given away freely, these discarded garments have created a multimillion-pound industry, where some of the world’s poorest communities pay to buy them.

Paralympian Ade Adepitan uncovers the unexpected journey of donated clothes after they leave Britain. His exploration leads to Ghana, the largest importer of these castoffs, where over a million pounds' worth of secondhand clothes arrive weekly. Ade meets the people whose livelihoods depend on this trade—from wholesalers and market vendors to importers earning as much as £25,000 daily. Yet, not everyone benefits from this industry.

The flood of inexpensive western clothing has severely impacted Ghana’s textile industry. Ade visits one of the few remaining factories, struggling to survive in the face of this competition. Beyond economic challenges, the influx of imported clothing has altered Ghanaian culture, with western styles quickly replacing iconic West African prints and traditional attire. Ade travels to remote villages where British high-street brands have become commonplace, signifying a profound change in local dress and identity.
