Santo Antão is the second largest and westernmost island of Cape Verde. Mediterranean plateaus alternate with tropical humid valleys. Terraces have been laid out on the steep slopes of the mountainous island, where vegetables are grown for daily consumption. In the evergreen Paúl Valley, coffee bushes grow almost as tall as a man.

Armindo Pires and his family live in the small village of Cobo de Ribeira in the middle of the mountains. They cultivate coffee and sugar cane. At harvest time, there is so much to do for Armindo and his two sons, Kevin and Calu, that they depend on helpers. The coffee is harvested, dried, hulled and roasted by hand. The sons process the sugar cane in their own distillery to make grogue, a liquor that tastes similar to spicy rum.

Armindo's wife Julia and her daughter-in-law Aurisia take care of the family's physical well-being. For lunch they have cachupa, the national dish of Cape Verde. Almost everything that grows on the island is used in the stew: maize, onions, green bananas, manioc, sweet potatoes, yams, taro roots, beans and cabbage. For dessert, Aurisia prepares a coffee pudding - her husband Kevin's favourite dessert.

At the end of the coffee harvest, Julia and Aurisia cook a caldo de peixe, a fish stew consisting of fresh, firm fish fillet, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and plantains.

While eating at the coffee plantation, Armindo thanks the harvesters. Although the yield this year was lower than in previous years due to the severe drought, he could not have done it without them.
