On the fourth day of the Kurukshetra War, Bhishma planned to defeat the Pandavas by any means necessary, as the third day had seen the Pandavas gaining the upper hand. Bhishma arrived with a massive army and immediately launched into a fierce battle. The Pandavas were anxiously waiting to see what strategies Bhishma would employ.
The battle began with Bhishma leading the Kaurava forces, supported by Duryodhana, Dronacharya, Kripacharya, and others. His primary target was Arjuna, believing that if Arjuna were defeated, the Pandavas would lose. Meanwhile, Arjuna’s son, Abhimanyu, was bravely fighting against the Kauravas, but was eventually surrounded by Ashwatthama, Shalya, and others. Despite being trapped, Abhimanyu continued to fight fiercely, but was ultimately killed. Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Drupada, avenged Abhimanyu by killing Shalya’s son.
Shalya, who was also the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva (the Pandavas), witnessed the death of his son Dhrishtadyumna, which caused him great grief. Enraged, he swore vengeance and joined the battle against the Pandavas. The conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas intensified throughout the day.
During the afternoon, Duryodhana joined Shalya in the battle, and Bhima confronted them in a fierce mace fight. Duryodhana, realizing that Bhima was overwhelming him, called upon the King of Magadha to send elephants to crush Bhima. The elephants charged towards Bhima, but Bhima fought valiantly, defeating them one by one. The King of Magadha also sent elephants towards Nakula and Sahadeva, as well as Abhimanyu. However, Abhimanyu killed the King of Magadha’s elephant with his weapons, causing the remaining elephants to scatter in fear.
This caused panic in Duryodhana’s ranks, and he ordered the entire Kaurava army to attack Bhima. Bhima, alongside his allies, fought like fierce warriors and forced the Kaurava soldiers to retreat. By the end of the day, Bhima’s army had dominated the battlefield.
Meanwhile, Duryodhana, along with his 99 brothers and other warriors, launched an attack on Bhima. Bhima killed them all, and his violent form struck terror into the hearts of the Kaurava forces. Bhishma, seeing the situation worsening, decided to act. He ordered Bhagadatta, a powerful warrior and son of Narakasura, to charge at Bhima with his mighty elephant, Supratika. This elephant was incredibly strong, and it rampaged through the battlefield, scattering the Pandava forces.
However, Ghatotkacha, Bhima’s son, arrived on the battlefield to help his father. Ghatotkacha, using his powerful Maya (illusion) abilities, grew stronger as the day progressed. He mounted his elephant and attacked the Kaurava forces, including Bhagadatta and his elephant. Ghatotkacha used his powers to defeat Bhagadatta’s elephant and wreak havoc on the Kaurava army.
Bhishma realized the situation had become critical, as Ghatotkacha’s powers were growing, and even Bhagadatta couldn’t withstand them. Bhishma, fearing Ghatotkacha’s strength, advised Duryodhana to stop the battle for the day. Despite his advice, Duryodhana became furious and accused Bhishma of not being able to handle the Pandavas. Bhishma reminded him that as long as Krishna, who represents Dharma, was on the Pandavas’ side, they were unbeatable.
Bhishma further explained that Krishna and Arjuna were incarnations of the divine Nara and Narayana, sent to destroy the asuras. He scolded Duryodhana for his arrogance and warned him that his actions would only lead to death. The day ended with Bhishma and the Kaurava forces retreating, as the Pandavas continued to gain strength, and Ghatotkacha’s magical powers proved overwhelming.
This marked the end of the fourth day of the war, with the Pandavas emerging victorious, despite the formidable efforts of Bhishma and the Kaurava forces.
