We all want children around us to have the best possible chance to thrive – to grow up healthy and reach their potential. To have the best start in life.
How parents, carers, teachers and adults involved with children communicate with them and the language they use can impact their mental and physical health and development for a lifetime.
Words have power, especially for children. They shape who we are and who we become.
The things adults say to us when we’re young stick with us.
Warm and inspiring words build us up, and are one of the essential building blocks we all need to thrive.
Hurtful words knock us down and leave invisible scars for a lifetime.
In fact, verbal abuse in childhood weakens the foundations of our developing brains, causing lasting damage.
We all want children around us to grow up happy and healthy, and free to follow their dreams.
That’s why we’ve launched Words Matter - a new charity on a mission to end verbal abuse of children by the adults around them.
Working in partnership with experts, decision makers, no profile and other organisations we focus on research, awareness and collaboration. Our allies supporting our mission include Anna Freud, Place2Be, NSPCC, Save the Children, Barnardo’s, MHI/Shout, The Fostering Network and The Mix.
We provide lots of helpful information and practical tips on how best to talk to children so they can blossom.
