Gastro-intestinal Cancer | By Niti Raizada

Learn about Gastro-intestinal cancer by Dr Niti from Fortis Hospital, Banglore

Gastrointestinal cancer is a group of cancers that affect the digestive system, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine (colon), rectum, and other organs involved in digestion, such as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Types of GI Cancer:

Esophageal Cancer: Esophageal cancer is a type of rare cancer that grows in the esophagus. The incidence and mortality rates of esophageal cancer have increased significantly in recent decades, resulting in over 0.6 million new cases and 0.54 million deaths worldwide in 2020.

Stomach (Gastric) Cancer: It is a growth of cells that starts in the stomach. The stomach is in the upper middle part of the belly, just below the ribs. 1.1 million new cases and 770,000 deaths of gastric cancer were estimated in 2020.

Colorectal Cancer: Colorectal cancer starts as non-cancerous polyps, which can be removed to prevent cancer. Healthcare providers recommend screenings for those over 45 or at high risk.

Liver Cancer: Liver cancer is a type of cancer that originates in liver cells. Symptoms are rare in the early stages but may include weight loss, stomach pain, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin as the cancer progresses.

Pancreatic Cancer: Pancreatic cancer affects the pancreas, causing symptoms like bloating, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, and jaundice. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, it has low survival rates due to difficulty in early detection.

Gallbladder Cancer: Gallbladder cancer is a cancer in the gallbladder, a small organ that aids in digestion. It is often found during treatment for other conditions like gallstones. The severity depends on location, size, spread, and general health.
