Goddess Kali, also known as Kalika, is the Hindu goddess connected with Shakti. She is one of the most misinterpreted goddesses in all human history. She is thought to be a destroyer, however, She destroys only to recreate, and what she destroys are ignorance, negative actions and behaviors and decay. Furthermore, She consumes all things and denotes the act of tasting or enjoying what our present society regards as forbidden.

Her name is derived from the Sanskrit word ”kal” which translates as ”time.” She was born out of the brows of Supreme Mother Durga during one of her fights with the asuras. She also defeated the demons Munda and Chanda and brought Ambika their heads, for which the Goddess is known as Chamundeshwari or Chamunda. As a side note, nowhere in the Hindu texts is the Goddess seen killing anything but asuras nor is She linked with the process of human dying.

Moreover, She is considered the great cosmic life-force (prana) and symbolizes the most primal will of all life, that is to never die and to live forever. She does not just destroy, the Goddess also creates.
