Vyuhus in Mahabhrata:
In Mahabhrata 21 battle formations were used by both Pandavas and Kauravas during the epic battle of Kurukshetra.
No.1: (Sarvatomukhi Danda Vyuha) ‘Outward Facing’ Formation – the Kauravas used this formation on Day 1
No.2: (Krauncharuma Vyuha) Crane Formation - the Pandavas used it on Day 2, and by the Kauravas on Day 6.
No.3: (Garuda Vyuha) Eagle Formation – we saw the Kauravas using it on Days 3 and 12.
No.4: Ardhachandra Vyuha - Crescent Formation- on Days 3, 12 and 16 the Pandavas used this formation.
No.5: Makara Vyuha Alligator Formation – both the Kauravas the Pandavas used it on Days 5, 6 and 16.
No.6: Syena Vyuha or the Hawk Formation - used by the Pandavas on Day 5.
No.7: Mandala Vyuha (Circle Formation) - used by the Kauravas on Day 7, and by the Pandavas on Day 9
No.8: Vajra Vyuha or the Diamond Formation - used by the Pandavas on Days 1 and 7.
No.9: Oormi Vyuha (Ocean Wave Formation) - used by the Kauravas on Day 8
No.10: Sringataka Vyuha (Horn Formation) - used by the Pandavas on Day 8
No.11: Sarvatobhadra Vyuha ( ‘Safe from all Sides’) - used by the Kauravas on Day 9
No.12: Asura Vyuha – used by the Kauravas on Day 10
No.13: Daiva Vyuha – used by the Pandavas on Day 10
No.14: Chakra Vyuha or the Chariot Wheel Formation – used by the Kauravas on Day 13
No.15: Sakata Vyuha (Box Formation),
No.17: Padma Vyuha (Lotus Formation)
No.18: Soochimukha Vyuha (Needle Face Formation) – used by the Kauravas on Day 14
