Matt's Cold Plunge:
As Matt enters the plunge, he takes long, deep breaths, inhaling through his nose and exhaling through his mouth in a controlled fashion.
This can be difficult if you're a complete beginner, but it's an important habit to create.
Matt uses a Whoop strap, and by monitoring the app on his phone, has noticed his heart rate spikes for the first minute or so, then normalizes after that initial shock.
Brie's Cold Plunge:
Brie isn't as much of a fan of cold plunging, but feels the benefits every time, so does it anyway!
Brie talks about the importance of sitting down into the plunge as fast as possible and not easing your way in slowly. This makes it easier to get over the initial shock and get started.
She also keeps her hands out of the water for the first minute of her plunge, as she feels putting her hands in takes the experience to the next level. She needs to prepare herself for that!
(I cruelly ask Brie to move in the water too, so she doesn't get used to the temperature around her!)
My (Dr. A's) Cold Plunge:
Before I get into the plunge, I like to mentally prepare myself and psyche myself up.
Then, similar to Matt, I take long, deep breaths as I enter the plunge, breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth. I also close my eyes through this breathing pattern.
Personally, I treat my cold plunges similar to a meditation session. I like to feel the sensations in my body and ask myself mental questions about how I feel in the moment.
I time my cold plunges by feel, opting to get out once I feel there is no urgency to actually get out. Most days, this will be around 3 or so minutes in.
Once I feel I'm at the point where I'll finish the session, I give myself a round of 9 deep breaths.
Once those 9 deep breaths are done, I'm outta there! 😁
